I can only imagine the level of burnout you can reach when your mechanic shop collects stress like used oil. After all, I work at writing funny stuff on the internet and some days end with me feeling like an auto-repair shop mop after a long day of being dragged on the floor.

Fourteen years, five dozen certifications, and enough overtime to fund a used Toyota, but somehow every car problem landed at the same guy's feet. The shop runs with three empty bays and one top tech, marinated in investor logic since the buyout. Management's main achievement is clicking "reject" on job candidates because interviews are hard and why solve the workload when you can just send another "we're looking" email?

Suddenly district managers call at odd hours, dangling extra money, fewer shifts, and guilt about how the shop might burn down without its sole non-liability. Every desperate offer is paired with a bewildered “why are you leaving” as if nobody has heard words like exhaustion or respect before.

The manager is very cool and told me he knows about where I'm coming from and this shit will not happen here, I was hammering out work and he told me he appreciated me trying to help the shop times but to take it easy and slow down a bit because he doesn't want me to be stressed out about beating them, that he prefers quality over quantity and my mental health.

    But the new gig lands with actual gratitude, slow days, and coworkers whose morale enhancement doesn’t involve emotional hostage-taking. It is wild how being appreciated once or twice can feel like a foreign language when burnout was HR’s first dialect.

  • RadishNew6502 My husband is a lead mechanic at a world wide automotive company for the past 22 years. The shit that is happening at corporate level is fucking horrible. I don't have words. He can clear 100k a year, and has done so for many years. Until January this year. They decided to restructure the pay for everyone to make it fair for the tire techs/lube guys. His pay is now flat rate at $33.50 an hour for 30 hours a week guaranteed. He will be lucky if he clears 70k this year as a result. E
